Introd. p. xix The Neonisms of America are collected and illustrated in ‘A Vocabulary or Collection of Words and Phrases which have been supposed to be peculiar to the United States of America, by John Pickering, Boston, 1816.’ Many of their supposed neonisms are English archaisms.
1844 J. O. Halliwell Thornton Romances (1844) 308 Smertly, sharply, quickly. This, I believe, is classed among American neonisms.
