Etymology: < scientific Latin Neophron, genus name ( M. J. C. L. de Savigny Descr. Egypte (1809) I. 68) < Hellenistic Greek Νεόϕρων , the name of a man transformed into a vulture in the Metamorphoses of Antoninus Liberalis (probably 2nd cent. a.d.), use as name of ancient Greek νεόϕρων childish in spirit < νεο- neo- comb. form + ϕρήν mind (see phren n.).

Any of several relatively small vultures now or formerly included in the genus Neophron, spec. the Egyptian vulture, N. percnopterus (now the only member of the genus). Also (in form Neophron): the genus itself.
