Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymons: neo- comb. form, tectonics n.
Etymology: < neo- comb. form + tectonics n., after Russian neotektonika (V. A. Obručev 1948, in Izvestija Akademii nauk SSSR Ser. Geol. v. 13).
Geology.
The branch of geology concerned with structural changes in the earth's crust which have occurred in the Cenozoic period (and esp. in or after the Miocene epoch). Also: such crustal changes collectively, or structural features resulting from them.
