单词 balon
释义

balonn.

Brit. /bəˈlɒn/, U.S. /bəˈlɔn/
Forms: 1600s ballon, 1600s– balon, 1600s– baloon, 1700s ballong, 1700s– balloon, 1700s baloen, 1700s–1800s balloen, 1800s balaum.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Portuguese balão; French balon.
Etymology: Originally < Portuguese balão, †ballaam (1534; plural balões, †baloens, †balones; < Tamil vaḷḷam and Malayalam vaḷḷam, both in sense ‘boat made from the trunk of a tree, canoe’); in later use partly reborrowed < French balon, †ballon long, oared boat of south-east Asia (1686; < Portuguese). Compare Portuguese balanco (1552) < Malay balang (now only in perahu balang kind of warship with oars and two masts), perhaps itself < Portuguese balão or its Dravidian etymon.
Now chiefly historical.
In parts of South and South-East Asia, esp. Siam (now Thailand): a long and richly decorated state barge propelled by oars. N.E.D. (1885) specifies the Siamese boats as ‘upwards of a hundred feet long’.
