Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu āb-kārī; Persian āb-kārī.
Etymology: < Urdu āb-kārī and its etymon Persian āb-kārī distillery, tax on the manufacture or sale of spirituous liquors < āb-kār distiller, wine merchant, cup-bearer ( < āb water ( < the same Indo-European base as Avestan ap , Sanskrit ap , Early Irish ab river: see afanc n.) + -kār , suffix forming agent nouns; ultimately < the same Indo-European base as Avestan kar- , Sanskrit kṛ- to make, produce: see karma n.) + , suffix forming abstract nouns. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ābkā·ri) /ɑːbˈkɑːrɪ/.
Indian English.
In India: the production and sale of distilled alcoholic drinks; the duty levied on this. Also used allusively with reference to the system of managing the sale of alcohol solely through certain licensed contractors.

1790 in H. Yule & A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson (1886) 752 In respect to Abkarry or Tax on Spirituous Liquors..it is evident that we cannot establish a general rate.
