单词 newst
释义

newstadv.

Brit. /ˈnjuːst/, U.S. /ˈn(j)ust/
Forms: 1700s neaust, 1700s–1800s neoust, 1700s–1800s newse, 1700s– newst, 1800s knawse (Wiltshire), 1800s nawst, 1800s neaous, 1800s neoust, 1800s neuce (Isle of Wight), 1800s neust, 1800s noist, 1800s noost, 1800s noust, 1800s nuost, 1800s–1900s neowst, 1900s neuss (Dorset).
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: anewst adv.
Etymology: Shortened < anewst adv.Occasional English regional spellings of anewst adv. as two words suggest reinterpretation of initial a- as a determiner (a adj.); this perhaps explains the development shown by the phrase newst of a newstness, where newst seems to function as subject complement (perhaps to be interpreted as an adjective). For similar uses of anewst adv. compare:?a1750 J. Cotton in Eng. Dial. Dict. (1903) IV. 259/2 Near a neawst, near ye matter.?c1750 Coll. Provincial Terms N. Wilts. in G. E. Dartnell & E. H. Goddard Gloss. Words Wilts. (1893) App. ii. 230 Which of those things are best?..they are anewst of a newstness.
English regional (southern and south-western). Now rare.
With reference to manner, character, or degree: nearly, almost, approximately. newst the matter: nearly right. newst of a newstness: having much the same importance or value in comparison to an alternative; cf. much of a muchness at muchness n. 4.
