单词 nizam
释义

Nizamn.1

Brit. /nᵻˈzɑːm/, /ˈnɪzam/, /ˈnʌɪzam/, U.S. /nəˈzɑm/, /naɪˈzɑm/, /nəˈzæm/, /naɪˈzæm/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu niẓām; Persian niẓām.
Etymology: < Urdu niẓām and its etymon Persian niẓām, short for Persian and Arabic niẓām al-mulk governor of the realm, lit. ‘(upholder of the) good order of the realm’ (a title originally held by Abū ʿAlī Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, renowned chief minister of the Seljuk Empire in the late 11th cent.), < Arabic niẓām good order, disposition, arrangement + al- the + mulk realm. Compare Nizam n.2The Hyderabad state came into existence in the first half of the 18th cent. The title niẓām al-mulk (Portuguese Nizamuluco) had previously been used by the father of the founder of a different Muslim dynasty, the Niẓāmšāhīs of Ahmadnagar, one of five Muslim dynasties occupying the northern Deccan in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Compare:1601 R. Johnson tr. G. Botero Trauellers Breuiat 37 Nizzamuluc & Idalcam (for so the Portugals call the two princes of Decan). Earlier English sources referring to Hyderabad use the title in full, e.g.:1742 J. Fraser Hist. Nadir Shah 44 They turned out Nizam al Muluck..from his Government of Deccan. [Note] Nizam al Muluck, is a Title signifying he who arranges and puts in Order the Empire.1753 J. Hanway Hist. Acct. Brit. Trade Caspian Sea IV. xvii. 138 Nizam al muluch, governor of deccan,..appropriated the revenues. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (nizā·m) /nɪˈzɑːm/.
