Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nerita.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin nerita (dubious reading in some editions of Pliny: see note) < ancient Greek νηρίτης , νηρείτης any of several kinds of sea-snail < Νηρεύς (see Nereid n.) + -ίτης -ite suffix¹.Post-classical Latin nerita is recorded (in the plural neritae) in certain early editions of Pliny Nat. Hist. 9. 103 (e.g. J. d'Alechamps, 1587), as also in Rondelet's citation of this passage ( De Piscibus Marinis (1555) II. xxiv.); modern editions retain the manuscript reading veneriae, plural of veneria Venus-shell.

Zoology.

Originally: any of various, probably chiefly aquatic, gastropod molluscs. Later: spec. any mollusc of the genus Nerita, comprising tropical marine prosobranch gastropods with a thick shell, a short or flattened spire, and a semicircular aperture; (also) the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 776. The extent of the genus was broader in Linnaeus' use.
