Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French nerval; Latin nervalis.
Etymology: Either < French nerval (1590 in Middle French) < nerf nerve (see nerf n.1) + -al -al suffix1, or < post-classical Latin nervalis (1267 in a British source; also in unguentum nervale , 1414 in a British source) < classical Latin nervus nerve n. + -ālis -al suffix1.
Of, relating to, or affecting the nerves.Now chiefly in English-language texts in publications from non-English-speaking countries.
