Etymology: < the name of the Niagara River in North America, flowing from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, on which there is a famous waterfall. Compare earlier niagara v.The name is first attested on French maps from the 17th cent. and represents Mohawk ohnyá·karaʔ, lit. ‘neck of land (between the lakes)’, now Niagara district, equivalent of Huron Onguiaahra (1641), Ongiara (1656), a Neutral town at Youngstown, New York State. The word was formerly pronounced (especially in poetry) Brit. /nɪəˈɡɑːrə/, U.S. /ˌniəˈɡɑrə/. Compare the following:1757 in W. Duncombe et al. tr. Horace Wks. I.
