Forms: 1900s– bangaram, 1900s– bangarang, 1900s– bangarangs, 1900s– bangerang, 1900s– banggarang, 1900s– bungorung.
Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative. Senses 1 and 2 may show two separate words of different origin. With sense 2 perhaps compare Portuguese banguelê riot, disorder (1899), perhaps a borrowing from an African language. Perhaps compare also Haitian Creole blengendeng, an ideophonic formation used adverbially of the sound of breaking crockery.
Caribbean (chiefly Jamaican).
