Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin nīdus , -fugous comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin nīdus nest (see nidus n.) + -fugous comb. form, after scientific Latin Nidifugae, group name (H. F. Gadow in A. Newton Dict. Birds (1894) 629). Compare nidicolous adj.
Zoology.
Of a young bird or (in later use also) other animal: well developed at birth or hatching and able to leave the nest almost immediately; precocial. Also (of a species): bearing young of this kind. Cf. nidicolous adj. 1.
