Etymology: Alteration of nithing n., probably arising from editorial misreading (see note below). Compare niddering n. and adj.In quot. 1605 at sense A. Camden (citing William of Malmesbury) appears to have mistaken the letter ð (in niðing) for d, thus giving rise to the form niding.
