Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: nether adj., land n.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < nether adj. + land n.1 + -er suffix1, chiefly with reference to the name of the Netherlands (Dutch Nederland ; < neder nether adj. + land land n.1), a north-western European country bordering the North Sea and now having Belgium on its southern border (though at various times it has included all or part of Belgium, Flanders, and Luxembourg), and Germany to the east, chiefly after Dutch Nederlander. Compare also Middle Low German Nēderlender inhabitant of the coastal lowlands, Middle High German niderlender inhabitant of a lowland area, including the Netherlands (German Niederländer inhabitant of the Netherlands), Swedish nedrländare inhabitant of the Netherlands (1573).The Netherlands were made an independent country in 1648 following a war of independence from Spain, which had begun in the mid 16th cent. Previously, the term Middle Dutch nederlant and its cognates could be applied to all of the lowland region on the North Sea coast, and originally also the Rhineland.
