Etymology: < modern Sanskrit netī (ritual drawing of) thread through nose and mouth, apparently < an unattested Prakrit formation (used in Ayurvedic contexts) related e.g. to Hindi netī cord (round a churning stick) ( < Sanskrit netra , in the same sense) and to late Sanskrit netrika clyster pipe, all ultimately < nī- to lead (see naik n.).

In hatha yoga: ritual cleansing of the nasal cavities and sinuses.The two forms most commonly practised are jala neti, rinsing the nasal cavities with a saline solution, and sutra neti, gently threading a wet string or thin plastic tubing through the nose and out of the mouth.
