-ergicsuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek -εργος , ἔργον , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -εργος, combining form (in e.g. ἄνεργος : see anergia n.) of ἔργον work (see erg n.1) + -ic suffix.Formations with reference to neurotransmission are found from the 1930s (earliest in adrenergic adj., cholinergic adj.). Compare earlier formations in more general senses (usually after a noun in -ergy ), e.g. energic adj., synergic adj., allergic adj., etc. In Greek the suffix -εργικός ( < -εργος + -ικός -ic suffix) generally combined with the preceding connective -ο- -o- connective to form -ουργικός (giving in English -urgic ): compare -urgy comb. form.
