Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: a- prefix6, Greek βλαστός , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + ancient Greek βλαστός sprout, offspring (see -blast comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin ablastes sterile (1848 or earlier in a medical context). Compare blastous adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăblæ·stəs) /əˈblæstəs/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Lacking capacity for new growth; sterile, unfruitful.
