Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain.It has been suggested that it is shortened < Italian gabbinetti toilets, but no evidence has been found to support this. Another theory suggests that the word is an alteration of necessary (see necessary n. 3b), after or directly < French nettoyer (see net v.2).
English regional (north-eastern).
An outside toilet; a lavatory.
