Forms: 1700s– noyau, 1800s nouya (irregular), 1800s noyeau (irregular). In sense 1 also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French noyau.
Etymology: < French noyau liqueur flavoured with apricot kernels (1785; 1721 in phrase eau de noyau ), small group of people giving rise to a larger group (1790), small group of people exercising an activity opposed to the aims of a larger collective (1844; compare sense 3), transferred uses of noyau kernel (1530 in Middle French; Old French, Middle French noiel , noel : see newel n.1). N.E.D. (1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (nwaˌyo) /nwajo/.
1. A liqueur made of brandy or spirit of wine flavoured with the kernels of stone fruits, almonds, citrus peel, and (sometimes) spices.
