Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek νομαρχία province or district < ancient Greek νομάρχης or νόμαρχος nomarch n. + -ία -y suffix3. Compare -archy comb. form. Compare nomarch n. (slightly earlier in the sense corresponding to sense 2). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nǫ·maɹki) /ˈnɒmɑːkɪ/.
