单词 nightern
释义

nighternadj.

Forms: 1600s nighterne.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: night n., -ern suffix.
Etymology: Probably < night n. + -ern suffix, after eastern adj., northern adj., etc.A connection with Old English nihterne , in the same sense (see quot. below), is highly unlikely. The origin of the suffix of the Old English word is uncertain; it may represent Latin -urnus (as in nocturnus : see nocturn n.); compare also Old English dægðerne (adjective) for use by day, everyday. Compare:OE Form of Confession (Lamb. 427) in Archiv f. das Studium der Neueren Sprachen (1914) 132 331 Per nocturnam pollutionem : þurh nihterne besmitenesse.
