Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Japanese lexical item. Etymons: nightingale n.1, floor n.1
Etymology: < nightingale n.1 + floor n.1, after Japanese uguisu-bari (19th cent. or earlier) < uguisu uguisu n. (sometimes called ‘Japanese nightingale’: compare quot. 1871 at that entry) + -bari, combining form of hari, nominalized stem of haru to stretch, lay (floorboards).
In Japan: a wooden floor, originally constructed in medieval times to warn of intruders, which when walked on emits a chirruping sound likened to a bird call.
