Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: no adv.1, see v., English 'em , 'em pron.
Etymology: < no adv.1 + see v. + 'em, variant of 'em pron., with allusion to the diminutive size of the insects (see e.g. quot. 1842).With forms in final -um , compare um at 'em pron. ζ. forms.
Chiefly North American.
Any of several minute, bloodsucking flies, esp. biting midges (family Ceratopogonidae).
