Originally: designating any technique in which a surgical site, wound, etc., is touched by sterilized instruments or dressings rather than the hands (esp. for procedures performed outside an operating theatre). Later also: designating any technique in which a lesion, tissue, etc., is not touched directly by instruments or the hands.
