Etymology: < classical Latin nōbilitāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of nōbilitāre to raise in rank, to cause to be renowned < nōbilis noble adj. + -itāre -itate suffix. Compare Middle French, French nobiliter (1339; now rare or obsolete). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nobi·liteit) /nəʊˈbɪlɪteɪt/.
