Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin non plus ultra.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin non plus ultra ‘(let there) not (be) more (sailing) beyond’, alleged to have been inscribed on the Pillars of Hercules (Straits of Gibraltar) < classical Latin nōn not (see non- prefix) + plūs more (see plus prep., n., adv., and adj.) + ultra ultra prep. So used in French and Italian (from 17th cent.). Compare ne plus ultra n.
