Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nigrēscere , -ence suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin nigrēscere to grow black (see nigrescent adj.) + -ence suffix; compare -escence suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (nəigre·sĕns) /naɪˈɡrɛsəns/.
