Etymology: < German Nigrescit (F. F. Hornstein 1867, in Zeitschr. der Deutsch. Geol. Ges. 19 343) < classical Latin nigrēscere to grow black (see nigrescent adj.) + German -it -ite suffix¹. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (ni·grĕsəit) /ˈnɪɡrəsaɪt/.

Mineralogy. rare.

An amorphous hydrated silicate of magnesium, ferrous iron, calcium, and aluminium, which is green when first exposed to the air but gradually turns black.
