Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nihil, nihilum.
Etymology: < classical Latin nihil nothing, variant of nihilum < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + hīlum a minimal quantity (see hilum n.). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (nəi·hil) /ˈnaɪhɪl/.
1. Nothing. Frequently as a count noun: a thing of no worth or value. Now rare.
