Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nihil obstat.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nihil obstat ‘nothing stands in the way’ < classical Latin nihil nothing (see nihil n.) + obstat , 3rd singular present indicative of obstāre to stand in the way (see obstant adj.).
A written statement that a work asserts no doctrinal or moral positions incompatible with the teaching of the Church, made by an official appointed to examine books requiring the permission of local Roman Catholic Church authorities for publication. Also in extended use.
