Etymology: < Japanese nikkei Japanese descent < nik- , combining form (before k ) of nichi- Japan (representing the first element of Nihon Nippon n.) + -kei lineage, line of descent, both < Middle Chinese. Compare later nikkeijin n.
A person of Japanese descent who has settled or been brought up abroad, esp. a member of any one of the first four generations of Japanese people to settle in the Americas; a nikkeijin. Frequently attributive.The nikkei community is made up primarily of the four generations known as Issei, Nisei (see nisei n.), Sansei (see sansei n.), and Yonsei.
