Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Nile , -o- connective.
Etymology: < the name of the river Nile (see Nile n.) + -o- connective.Formations in English are found from the mid 19th cent. (see e.g. Nilo-Hamitic adj.). Compare earlier Nilometer n., Niloscope n.
Forming nouns and adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to the Nile, or the Nile region’, esp. in the names of language groups. Cf. Nilo-Hamite n., Nilo-Hamitic adj., Nilo-Saharan adj.Largely disused among linguists except in the formations referred to above.
