Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Νειλοσκοπεῖον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Νειλοσκοπεῖον a scale graduated to show the rise and fall of the Nile < Νεῖλος Nile n. + σκοπεῖον -scope comb. form. Compare French Niloscope (1705 in the passage translated in quot. 1707).
Obsolete.
