Etymology: < noble adj. + science n., probably after Middle French, French noble science (1370–2). Compare post-classical Latin nobiles scientiae (see note).The text cited in quot. c1475 at sense 1 is translated from a Middle French translation of an abbreviated version (the basis of 15th and 16th cent. editions) of the Latin Secreta Secretorum (13th cent.); these later editions have in scientiis liberalibus (and variants thereof) here.
