Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French noblesse oblige.
Etymology: < French noblesse oblige, lit. ‘noble rank entails responsibility’ (1808 in G. Duc de Levis Maximes, Réflexions, Essais (ed.2) 13) < noblesse noblesse n. + oblige , 3rd singular present indicative of obliger (see oblige v.).The expression is cited as ‘un vieux mot’ by Balzac in 1836.
