Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nocēre , -i- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin nocēre to hurt, injure (see nocent n. and adj.) + -i- connective. Compare post-classical Latin noci- (in e.g. nocifer : see nociferous adj.).Attested in a small number of English formations from the beginning of the 20th cent., earliest in nociceptive adj.
Chiefly Physiology.
Forming words with the sense ‘of, relating to, or involving pain’.
