Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin noctilūca.
Etymology: < classical Latin noctilūca moon, lantern, in post-classical Latin also glow-worm (from 12th cent. in British sources), firefly (from mid 13th cent. in British sources) < nocti- , nox night (see nocti- comb. form) + lūcēre to shine (see lucent adj.). Compare French noctiluca a kind of phosphorescent substance (1678), noctiluque phosphorescent animal (1722), marine dinoflagellate (1823). Compare also noctilucy n.
