Etymology: < German Niobium (H. Rose 1844, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 63 335: see note) < Niobe , the name of the daughter of Tantalus (see Niobe n.) + -ium -ium suffix. Compare French niobium (1844 in a translation of Rose; compare quot. 1845).The element was named by Heinrich Rose (1795–1864), German analytical chemist, who rediscovered it in the tantalites of Bavaria, and wished to reflect the similarity between the metals niobium and tantalum.

Chemistry.

A soft, greyish-white chemical element, atomic number 41, which is one of the transition metals, occurs in tantalite, columbite, and other minerals, and is used in superconducting alloys. Symbol Nb. Also (chiefly North American) called columbium.
