Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: niobium n., calcium n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < nio- (in niobium n.) + cal- (in calcium n.) + -ite suffix1; apparently coined by E. H. Nickel (see quot. 1956).
Mineralogy.
A basic orthorhombic silicate and fluoride of niobium and calcium, (Ca,Nb)4Si(O,OH,F)9, which occurs as yellow crystals.

1956 E. H. Nickel in Amer. Mineralogist 41 785 A new mineral species, for which the name ‘niocalite’ is here proposed, has been identified in rock from the Oka district, 20 miles west of Montreal, Quebec.
