Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nithsdale.
Etymology: < the title of William Maxwell, fifth Earl of Nithsdale, who escaped from the Tower of London in 1716 disguised in a riding hood which his wife had brought him. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (ni·þsdēil) /ˈnɪθsdeɪl/.
Obsolete.
A long hooded riding cloak of a type fashionable in the 18th cent.
