Etymology: < nitrite n. + -oid suffix, after French nitritoïde (G. Milian 1912, in Bull. de la Soc. Française de Dermatol. et Syphiligraphie 23 521).
Medicine.
Designating an adverse drug reaction (originally to arsenicals, now esp. to parenteral gold salts) characterized by facial flushing, nausea, dizziness, and rarely hypotension and syncope, resembling the effects of the vasodilator amyl nitrite.
