Designating or relating to a substance or chemical principle supposedly present in both air and nitre and, according to the theories of John Mayow (1641–79), responsible for processes such as combustion, fermentation, and respiration. Cf. nitre n. 3.

1674 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 9 102 These Igneous particles, conceived by him [sc. Mayow] to be common to Niter and Air, he calls Nitro-aerial, from whence the Spirit of Niter derives its caustique and corrosive nature.
1682 N. Grew Disc. Tasts in Plants vi. iv. §7 in Anat. Plants 287 Those Roots which are Biting, have but few..Aer-Vessels; whereby fewer parts of the nitroaereal Sap are carryed off into the Trunk.
1744 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 43 20 Those from the Brain, he says, are nitro-aerial Particles, and the true Animal Spirits.
1799 Med. & Physical Jrnl. 1 252 He further adds, that the nitro-aerial spirit gives the red colour to bodies in which it exists, not unlike the fuming spirit of nitre.
1812 H. Davy Elements Chem. Philos. 26 Mayow of Oxford, in 1674, published his treatises on the nitro-ærial spirit, in which he advanced opinions similar to those of Boyle and Hooke.
1901 M. Foster Lect. Hist. Physiol. 187 This was in his view a fermentation set up between the combustible, sulphurous particles residing in the muscle, and the nitro-aereal spirit brought to it by the nerves.
1992 W. H. Brock Fontana Hist. Chem. ii. 73 Calcination involved the mechanical addition of nitro-aerial particles to a metal.
1997 R. Porter Greatest Benefit to Mankind ix. 222 Fermentation was a motion of nitro-aerial particles occurring spontaneously whenever they encountered sulphur or salt particles.
