Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: nitro- comb. form, glycerine n.
Etymology: < nitro- comb. form + glycerine n. Compare French nitroglycérine (1855 or earlier; compare trinitroglycérine (1854)), German Nitroglycerin (1855 or earlier).Nitroglycerine was first made in 1846 by Ascanio Sobrero, who called it proglycerin (see further J. R. Partington History of Chemistry (1961–70) IV. 476).
An explosive oily liquid, CH2(NO3)CH(NO3)CH2(NO3), which is obtained by treating glycerol with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, and is used in the manufacture of dynamite and medicinally as a vasodilator. Also called glyceryl trinitrate, trinitroglycerine. Cf. nitro n. 2.
