Etymology: < classical Latin niv-, nix snow (see nival adj.) + -ation suffix. Compare French nivation (1909). Compare nivated adj.
Physical Geography.
Erosion of the ground beneath and at the sides of a snow bank undergoing seasonal melting, resulting in the formation of a shallow depression.
