In recent use also: a native or inhabitant of Northumberland.The Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria stretched from the River Humber to the Firth of Forth. More recently the name has been used for a smaller area in the extreme north-east of England, approximately equivalent to the county of Northumberland.
