Etymology: < French nonchalance (1150 in Old French) < nonchalant nonchalant adj. + -ance -ance suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nǫ·nʃălăns; [as French], noṅʃalāṅs) /ˈnɒnʃələns/ [as French] /nɔ̃ʃalɑ̃s/.
The condition of being nonchalant; (deliberate) lack of enthusiasm or interest; casual indifference, unconcern.Usually an attribute of a person, but sometimes in extended use as an attribute of a person's demeanour, utterance, etc.
