Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin notonectum, Notonecta.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin notonectum (c1600 or earlier) < noto- noto- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek νήκτης swimmer (see Nectria n.). In β. forms < scientific Latin Notonecta, alteration of post-classical Latin Notonectum (1758 in Linnaeus, although probably earlier: see quot. 17521 and note below).Notonectum appears as a Latin (neuter) singular in the source translated in quots. 16581, 16582. Linnaeus (1758) uses Notonecta as a (feminine) singular form, with the Latin plural Notonectae.
Entomology.
A predatory aquatic bug of the genus Notonecta (family Notonectidae), which swims on its back propelled by its long back legs; a backswimmer. Also: the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 439. In early use, applied to members of the family now placed in other genera.
