Etymology: < classical Latin obumbrātiōn-, obumbrātiō- darkening, overshadowing, in post-classical Latin spec. with reference to the Holy Spirit (4th cent.), prefiguration, foreshadowing (from a709 in British sources) < obumbrāt- , past participial stem of obumbrāre (see obumbrate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French obombration the action of overshadowing (1519 in Middle French with reference to the Holy Spirit; earlier in sense ‘that which casts a shadow over’ (c1174 in Old French as obumbration )). Compare later obumbrate v. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫbɒmbrēi·ʃən) /ɒbʌmˈbreɪʃən/.
