Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obvallātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin obvallātus, past participle of obvallāre obvallate v. Compare vallate adj. With botanical use compare scientific Latin obvallata (Linnaeus Mantissa Plantarum (1767) 61). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫbvæ·lĕt) /ɒbˈvælət/.
Botany and Zoology. Obsolete.
Walled up; surrounded as by a rampart.
