Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obvenīre.
Etymology: < classical Latin obvenīre to happen, occur, to fall to the lot of, to be assigned to, in post-classical Latin also to stand in the way of (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < ob- ob- prefix + venīre to come (see Venite n.). Compare Middle French, French obvenir (1369), and earlier obvent v.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To occur, befall, happen.
